Four districts in one, not twenty identical suburbs
The Hills District covers about as much variety as any roofing area in Sydney. A 1960s single-storey tile roof in Winston Hills, a six-plane two-storey roof in Glenhaven, a hundred metres of shed sheeting at Maraylya and a ten-year-old Colorbond estate roof at Box Hill are four separate trades problems. We have grouped the suburbs the way the roofs actually group.
The older established suburbs
Mature tree cover, brick-and-tile stock from the 1960s through the 1990s, and valleys that fill with gum leaf every season. Restoration, repointing and valley work dominate here.
- Castle Hill — mixed eras either side of Old Northern Road and Showground Road
- Baulkham Hills — project-era brick and tile, with Bidjigal Reserve on its eastern side
- Winston Hills — built from the 1960s, the classic restoration candidate
- West Pennant Hills — bushland blocks beside Cumberland State Forest
- Cherrybrook — 1980s and 1990s homes on former orchard land
- Glenhaven — half-acre blocks, big roofs, heavy tree cover
The large two-storey belt
Complex multi-plane roofs, deep internal valleys and genuine two-storey access. Repairs here are usually at a junction rather than in the open field of tiles, and access is a real part of the quote.
- Kellyville — large brick homes from the 1990s and 2000s
- Bella Vista — between Old Windsor Road and Norwest Boulevard
- Norwest — the business park precinct and the newer residential around it
- Beaumont Hills — late-1990s and 2000s estate roofs
The newer Colorbond estates
Mostly under fifteen years old. The faults are detailing and workmanship, not age: fixings, flashing laps, unflashed penetrations and gutters that do not fall properly.
- Rouse Hill — around the town centre and Rouse Hill Regional Park
- Box Hill — still being built out in the North West growth area
- North Kellyville — the precinct between Smalls Creek and Cattai Creek
Rural-residential and acreage
Long roof runs, large sheds, tank water, and in many cases land mapped as bushfire prone against the Berowra Valley and Cattai bushland.
- Dural — along the Old Northern Road ridge
- Round Corner — the town centre at the Kenthurst Road junction
- Middle Dural — acreage further north, in Hornsby Shire
- Kenthurst — acreage and hobby farms
- Annangrove — rural blocks and large sheds
- Galston — the village and the bushland edge above Galston Gorge
- Maraylya — small-acreage and horse properties on the north-western edge
Two councils, one district
Most of the area sits in The Hills Shire. Cherrybrook, West Pennant Hills, Galston and Middle Dural are in Hornsby Shire, and Castle Hill, Glenhaven and Dural straddle the boundary — so which council applies can come down to which side of a line your block sits on. For a like-for-like roof replacement that usually makes no difference, since it is normally treated as maintenance rather than development. It starts to matter with heritage listings, bushfire-prone land and any change to roof form.
Not sure which page applies
It does not matter much — the work is the same across all twenty suburbs. Call (02) 9100 0388 and describe the house, or ask for a free inspection and we will come and look at the roof.
Start instead from the service you need: roof repairs, restoration, replacement, metal and Colorbond, gutters, storm damage or an inspection and report.
